Carolina Panthers wide receiver Shi Smith was arrested on Friday on gun and drug charges.
Smith was speeding while driving in his hometown of Union County in South Carolina, according to police. He was alleged to have been driving 16-24 mph over the 55 mph speed limit.
The officer who pulled Smith over says he smelled marijuana upon approaching the car. Smith was arrested for unlawful carrying of a handgun, possession of narcotics with intent to distribute, and speeding.
Smith’s bond was set at $6,000, which he paid, according to TMZ Sports.
Smith is due back in court in June.
“This is a pending legal matter and there will be no further comment at this time,” the Panthers said of the matter.
Smith, 23, was a sixth-round pick by the Panthers last year. He had 6 catches for 104 yards in 6 games.
